SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The future of the “Indians” nickname for Saugatuck Public Schools’ sports teams will be considered tonight.
No final decisions will be made during the monthly board meeting, but Julie Dye of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians is slated to “provide education and awareness surrounding the misrepresenting of Native names” before the panel. “There has been some talk among board members for a little while about the appropriateness of our ‘Indians’ name,” Superintendent Dr. Tim Travis said on “WHTC Morning News” during a Monday appearance. “It’s a good time to revisit this.”
Also addressing the board is Saugatuck High graduate John Fox, whose artwork of an Indian head in the school’s gym is the only Native American symbol still in use by the district. Fox has since reportedly repudiated his artwork.
Saugatuck High’s official symbol is currently an orange block “S.”
The virtual meeting is set for 6 PM, and information on public participation is here.
