GAYLORD, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The National Weather Service describing what was a “large and extremely dangerous tornado” touched down up north in the Gaylord area on Friday, May 20, killing 2, and injuring 44.
NWS Gaylord issuing the warning around 3:46 p.m., with the tornado being spotted near M-32 and Murner Road, just west of downtown. It cut through the city at about 4 p.m.
The storm was moving about 50 miles per hour when the tornado formed, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather event caused heavy damage to homes and business along M-32, with power lines and trees down across roadways.
In a tweet, Governor Gretchen Whitmer says that her heart goes out to the people of Gaylord following the storm. She said, “To the entire Gaylord Community – Michigan is with you. We will do what it takes to rebuild.”
