SPRING LAKE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Voters in Spring Lake have voted no to disincorporate the village of Spring Lake.
The measure would have allowed for a petition to be formed to get the disincorporation issue on the November ballot. Tuesday night’s decision after Village President Joyce Verplank-Hatton announced her plans to resign on Monday, August 7.
Before she was elected last year, Verplank-Hatton campaigned on disincorporating the village. She said that if voters approved yesterday’s measure, she would continue efforts to disincorporate the village as a resident. If voters said no, she said she would let it go.
She is expected to resign today. President Pro-tem Mark Powers will become president of the village after Verplank-Hatton resigns, and will remain as such until her term is over.
