MARNE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – An apartment fire in Marne has claimed the life of a 51-year-old man.
The victim is David John Fisher.
Captain Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says the fire started about 4:35 a.m. at the State Street Apartments at 14532 State Street located between Amelia Court and Maple Avenue in Wright Township of Ottawa County.
A resident of the apartment complex smelled smoke and called 911. The resident is a neighbor to the victim and began to investigate the fire that was coming from apartment number five.
The first responding deputy on scene found flames and smoke on the southwest portion of the complex. He attempted to enter the apartment, but was driven back by extreme heat and smoke. The deputy evacuated the other four apartments in the complex.
Fisher was found in apartment five after Wright-Tallmadge Fire Department extinguished the flames. An autopsy is scheduled and the victim reportedly has medical issues and was on oxygen, but it is unclear if that played a role in the fire.
There were no other injuries in the fire and damage of the other apartments was minimal. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Detective Unit was assisted by the Wright-Tallmadge Fire Department and the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Division.
