HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A Zeeland police officer is recovering after being bitten by a suspect and a Zeeland man in his 20s is in Ottawa County Jail, awaiting charges after an incident after 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2020.
Zeeland Police Chief Tim Jungel tells WHTC police were called by concerned relatives of the man, after he left home last night.
When police attempted to take him into custody for outstanding warrants, a scuffle ensued, and the man bit the police officer’s hand, Jungel said.
The bite broke the officer’s skin, “so he’s had a number of tests to make sure the officer has not been exposed to a variety of different illnesses,” Jungel said. The officer may be back on the job tonight, “depending on how his hand is doing,” Jungel said.
The officer and suspect are not being named at this time; the suspect is facing charges of resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. Jungel said the officer’s injury is the most-significant in recent memory.
