HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Staff from the State Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the fatal accident that took place Tuesday at the Holland Civic Center.
The two men who were working for Extreme Demolition, a firm retained by G.O construction on the renovation, were working on a small section of cement floor on the second level of the building near the eastern end when a section of that floor collapsed, causing the workers to fall. 38-year-old Ruben Gomez-Vazques of Grand Rapids was killed and 41-year-old Rafael Hernandez-Alvarez was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Where does the renovation project go from here?? Interim City Manager Greg Robinson says those on the project at City Hall and on site are still reeling from the incident mentally and emotionally.
“We certainly will be talking once the project gets back underway and looking at schedules and so forth. Right now that is premature at this point. We’ll get to it, no doubt about that. It was anticipated to be completed in a year from now, next Fall. We will address those issues as the time is appropiate.”
Holland Public Safety detectives are investigating the incident “as a fatal workplace accident at this point
