HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 3, 2026) – Another step in the process of building a municipal recreation center for the City of Holland was taken on Wednesday night.
City Council members unanimously approved a nearly $1.1 million contract with NexGen to conduct site preparation for the project, which would be adjacent to Smallenberg Park off of Fairbanks Avenue near East 16th Street. The city wants to build an 86,000 square-foot structure, which would bring most of the municipal recreation department’s operations into one location.
This agreement would deal with getting the land in shape to support the building, and NexGen would be working in conjunction with overall general contractor Lakewood Construction. Last month, council approved issuing up to $22 million in bonds for the overall project, with the hope that construction could begin in November.
The council’s OK means work can begin right after the Labor Day holiday, according to Assistant City Manager Matt Van Dyken, who is the city’s point man on the project. He believes that it would take between 12 and 15 months before the recreation center becomes a reality.
