LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 10, 2026) – Could we see a repeat of a dragged-out state budget situation of last year in Lansing?
MIRS News is reporting that the state Board of Education, as well as several educational leaders, separately sent a resolution and a letter to Governor Whitmer, state Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, and House Speaker Matt Hall, calling on them to pass the School Aid Budget by July 1st. The news service says that differences in making up federal Medicaid funding shortfalls are “gumming up” a joint legislative committee effort to reconcile differences in each chamber’s proposed Fiscal 2027 budget.
Second-term Republican Representative Nancy DeBoer of Holland, Chairwoman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, but not on the Appropriations Committee that has direct access to the budget situation, is optimistic that the deal can be reached far ahead of the October 1st deadline when a new fiscal year begins.
House K-12 Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Kelly of Saginaw has advised public school districts to begin their budget writing process now based on per pupil foundation funding of $10,300, something that the Michigan Association of School Boards claims it can’t do due to funding for at-risk and special ed students, as well as for school safety initiatives.
