ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 21, 2026) – The investigation into a December incident in Hamilton that took the life of its long-time Fire Department Chief and one-time Allegan County Sheriff has concluded.
On Monday, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office announced that, after a thorough investigation by its Crash Reconstruction Team, and following consultation with the county’s prosecuting attorney’s office, no charges will be sought in the death of David Haverdink. The 74-year-old fire chief was hit by a passing vehicle while he was attending to a medical incident on Lincoln Road (M-40) near 136th Avenue on December 23rd, and succumbed on Christmas Day.
He was a 51-year veteran of the department, with more than four decades of service as its chief. He was also a two-term Allegan County Sheriff, from 1993 to 2001.
