ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 3, 2025) – It apparently is going to cost a little more to live and do business in downtown Zeeland in 2025.
Unless something drastic happens during this Monday evening’s biweekly business meeting, that city’s Council is expected to approve a Special Assessment Resolution No. 5 that will collect more than $280,000 over the next five years from property owners in the downtown district. This is to pay for decorative amenities, municipal parking lot snow removal, and other maintenance issues, and the annual levy will be based on square footage.
Mayor Kevin Klynstra said that this assessment had been suspended during the COVID 19 era, but was restarted last year, and only one property owner spoke up at a public hearing last month on the matter.
If approved, the first billing of this special assessment will be sent to affected property owners later this month.
The Zeeland City Council holds a work-study session at 6 PM prior to the 7 PM business meeting, both in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
