GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 23, 2024) – It won’t be life in prison for a 33-year-old suburban Atlanta man, but James Leonard Taylor should spend much of his adult life behind bars anyway.
Ottawa County Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing on Monday handed down a sentence of between 22 and a half and 75 years following a June conviction of second-degree murder and felony firearm use stemming from the March 3, 2023 death of Aaron James Barlow inside of a parked vehicle at a Holland Heights area apartment complex. The 54-year-old victim from Covert had known the assailant, although neither was living in the complex at the time.
Taylor was apprehended later that day in the area of 12th Street and Dartmouth Avenue, but while he was still at large, a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby residents was issued, and the start of classes at Holland Heights Elementary School, across the street from where the assailant was arrested, was held up as a precaution, according to Holland Public Schools Director of Safety and Security Joe Soto.
Hulsing had the option of handing down a prison sentence of life for Taylor, according to state law.
