She was born Evelyn Joanne Rupert on August 31, 1929, to parents Stanton and Alta Rupert. She was the youngest of four daughters: Donna, Marilyn, and Jeanne (her twin). After graduating from Greenwich, Ohio, high school, she attended Ashland College (now University). There she met Robert Hubbard and officially changed her name to Joanne Rupert Hubbard when she married him on August 14, 1949. They moved to Bedford, Ohio, and had 4 children, Kay, Jean, Bob, and Kim.
Joanne was an amazing wife and mother. She was inclusive and supportive, always inviting people to be part of her circle, and working hard to support her family and friends. She led a Girl Scout troop, taught Sunday school, and volunteered in many civic capacities. Once all her children were in school, she finished her bachelor’s degree and began teaching 7th grade in Kenston, Ohio. Her colleagues and students loved her.
She enjoyed reading, puzzles, card games, and baking pies. When she and Bob retired, they moved to Holland, Michigan, to spend time with their grandchildren, and then to Ellenton, Florida, where they made great friends. She worked in the library and taught water aerobics. They were active members of the United Methodist Church. They traveled extensively and included their children in several of those trips.
Her husband, Bob, died in 2015. She remained in Tidevue (Ellenton, Florida) with a supportive group of friends. She continued to travel and have fun. The pandemic disrupted her plans to relocate nearer her children, and it was in the fall of 2022 that she moved to Holland, Michigan. She moved into Freedom Village and the staff reports that she was a sassy and joyful character.
Joanne was predeceased by her father Stanton Rupert, mother Alta Rupert, her husband Robert Hubbard, and sisters Donna, Marilyn, and Jeanne.
She is survived by her children, Kay Hubbard (Dan Fisher) of West Olive, Michigan, Jean (Rich) Valentine of Guysville, Ohio, Bob Hubbard (Meredith Boylan) of New York City. New York and Kim (Bob) Yako of Orange Beach, Alabama. Joanne has 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren (and one more on the way), and many close relatives and friends.
