Hope College’s Greg Mitchell ‘89 has been voted as the MIAA Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year.
The honor is voted on by MIAA coaches and is based on the achievements of coaches both during regular-season and postseason competition.
Mitchell led the Flying Dutchmen to a third consecutive MIAA Tournament championship after they defeated No. 6 Calvin University at top-seed Trine University in the semifinals and No. 9 Trine in the title game.
Hope finished one game out of first place in the MIAA regular-season standings with an 11-3 league record.
“The recognition is attributed to the outstanding assistant coaches around me and the most cohesive and coachable group I could ask for,” Mitchell said. “Our late-season push resulted from a bunch of guys who played with phenomenal toughness defensively and genuine unselfishness offensively.
“We overcame way too many injuries for one season, but at the same time, it allowed the strength of our team culture and overall depth to surface. This is a true team that peaked at the right time and was an absolute joy to coach.”
The Flying Dutchmen finished the season with a 23-7 overall record after reaching the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
In 10 seasons, Mitchell owns a 183-84 record and led the Flying Dutchmen to six trips to the NCAA Tournament and four MIAA regular-season championships.
