GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 17, 2024) – Overshadowed somewhat by the success of the women’s basketball team, including the 700th triumph by Flying Dutch coach Brian Morehouse this past Saturday, the Hope Flying Dutchmen renew what some are calling one of the greatest college basketball rivalries with a Wednesday night trip to Grand Rapids.
Both teams are tied atop the MIAA standings with 4-0 records, but while Hope is 12-3 overall, Calvin is 14-1 and ranked fourth nationally.
In 210 games, the Orange and Blue hold a 109-101 advantage, scoring just 51 more points over those contests than the Knights. Last season, each team won on the other’s court, including two triumphs by Hope in a 10-day span that culminated with a MIAA tournament title. Greg Mitchell has experienced The Rivalry as a player during his undergraduate days, winning four of nine meetings from 1986 through 89, and for the past nine years as coach of the Flying Dutchmen, splitting 11 encounters with the Maroon and Gold.
Coverage of the Hope-Calvin men’s basketball game from Van Noord Arena with Mike Coleman begins at 7 PM on The Lakeshore’s 92 7 The Van.
