Four Hope College student-athletes have been selected as Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Athletes of the Week: Lauren Lee and Addie VanderWeide in volleyball, Rebecca Markham in women’s cross country and Ian Petruska in men’s cross country.
VanderWeide (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) is the MIAA Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.
The junior outside hitter led the third-ranked Flying Dutch to a four-set victory at home over No. 7 Calvin University last week.
VanderWeide collected a match-high 22 kills with a .419 attack percentage against the Knights. The business major also recorded 11 digs.
Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) earned the MIAA Volleyball Speciality of the Week honor for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career.
The sophomore setter totaled 52 assists without an error against Calvin. The biology major also recorded 12 digs.
Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) is the MIAA Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the first time.
The senior civil engineering major placed 12th out of 359 runners at the Pre-National Meet hosted by Dickinson University (Pa.) by recording a 6K time of 22 minutes, 19.9 seconds. Markham helped the 29th-ranked Flying Dutch finish higher than four teams that were ranked higher in the national poll.
Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins) received the MIAA Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor for the first time after finishing 73rd out of 377 runners at the Pre-National Meet hosted in Newville, Pa.
The freshman clocked an 8K time of 20:02.6 and helped the Flying Dutchmen place 15th out of 38 teams.
