HOLLAND, MI (92 7 WHTC, Nov. 4, 2026) – Two separate housing projects, along with a future recreation center, highlighted Wednesday night’s Holland City Council meeting agenda.
The Tulip City’s governing panel unanimously approved a $24 million construction bid by Lakewood Construction for building an 86,000-square-foot rec center next to Smallenburg Park, off of Fairbanks Avenue. Work is slated to begin late this year, and ribbon-cutting by the spring of 2028. Part of the funding for the overall $25.6 million project is coming from a $5 million estate gift from the Heeringa family, with the rest coming from municipal bonds sales.
In addition, Council unanimously approved separate Brownfield Plans and Municipal Services Agreements for a 120-rental unit, affordable housing project on nearly five acres off of Country Club Road near East 16th Street, as well as for a $52 million Kensington West effort. That consists of a proposed 182-unit plan on two parcels, totaling around 50 acres, in the vicinity of Lincoln Road (M-40) and I-196.
The Holland City Council’s business session was in Chambers at Holland City Hall. An online link to the meeting agenda and supporting documents is here.
