ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 10, 2023) – A 21-year-old Jenison man suffered critical injuries after a two-vehicle collision involving a semi and a sedan just east of Zeeland on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan DeVries, the unnamed motorist was eastbound on Chicago Drive (M-121) around 3:30 PM when he crashed into the side of a semi that was attempting to complete a Michigan turn from westbound Chicago Drive near 80th Avenue. The driver was pinned inside of his vehicle and had to be extricated by rescue workers. He was taken to an undisclosed “Grand Rapids area” hospital for treatment, while the trucker, a 48-year-old Jenison man, was not hurt.
The crash closed Chicago Drive for several hours, which snarled traffic looking to head east from the Zeeland area that cannot enter eastbound I-196 at Byron Road due to long-term construction. An investigation into the incident continues.
