LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 28, 2024) – The lowest jobless numbers in the state are along the Lakeshore.
In figures released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, the non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.1 percent in Ottawa County for May is the lowest among the state’s 83 counties, although that figure is three tenths of a percentage point higher than in April. Allegan County, whose rate fell two tenths in a month’s span to 3.2 percent, is tied with Grand Traverse, Kent and Livingston counties for second. A year ago, joblessness stood at 3.3 percent in Ottawa County and 3.4 percent in Allegan County.
These mixed figures are consistent with overall trends statewide, in which 53 counties had reductions, and nine of the 17 major labor market areas saw higher unemployment, including Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Statewide unemployment stood at 4.1 percent for May, up three tenths from April.
