HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 27, 2023) – The owners of the Ottawa Beach General Store have announced plans to rebuild the Holland beach staple after the 2023 season is complete, opening again in time for the 2024 summer season.
The owners plan to keep the store as true to the original as possible, providing the same vintage charm the store is known for. Working with Dixon Architecture, the store will be recreated to have the same general historical theme and layout, while updating the facility with modern materials.
The Ottawa Beach General store was built in the late 1930s on 0.2 acres near Lake Macatawa and Holland State Park. Current ownership purchased the store out of foreclosure in 2010 in order to maintain the Lakeshore store’s role as a summertime destination for the community. At that time, patrons were quoted
in local media as saying:
• “We were afraid it might not reopen this year, but it’s open and we’re happy.”
• “It still has vintage character of the old General Store with improvements for the customers.”
• “We come each summer with our 14 grandchildren. It’s a nightly tradition for ice cream.”
Located at 2256 Ottawa Beach Road, the store has a rich history in the Holland beach community. Whether it’s an ice cream cone or one of the many famous sundae options, a cold drink or delicious snack on the way to the beach, a chic sweatshirt or t-shirt, or last-minute camping supplies, the Ottawa Beach General Store has patrons covered.
Initial project plans were presented to the Park Township Planning Commission last December 15th. Following pending township approvals, construction is scheduled to start after the 2023 summer season. The renovated store will be open for the 2024 season.
