HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 25, 2022) – Could there be a break in the blizzard conditions that have hit the Lakeshore as Christmas approaches?
The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids on Saturday evening upgraded from a Blizzard Warning that had been in effect from 4 PM Thursday through 7 PM on Saturday, to a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 PM Saturday through 7 PM Sunday. This is due to lake effect snow showers that will linger through the rest of the holiday weekend, adding up to another two inches of snow to that which had fallen during the major storm. In addition, cold temperatures and winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour will keep roads icy and wind chills below zero.
As for snowfall amounts, a NWS spotter on Holland’s North Side noted 15 inches of snow had fallen over a 66-hour period that ended at 7 AM on Sunday, while one in Grandville measured 22½ inches in that same time span, and another near Otsego only saw 11 inches through 12 Midnight on Sunday.
In a late Saturday afternoon update, Alex Doty of the Ottawa County Road Commission noted that, “Road Commission crews continue to work hard on their response to the winter weather event. Our team notes that some rural routes are still closed due to snow drifts, and crews are working to open those areas even more. Overnight plow crews will work through the night to push back primary and local routes as best as possible in advance of day crews that will be coming in early on Christmas Day to continue this response and try to get rural and subdivision routes opened up more.”
Although there had been numerous spin outs and collisions, there had not been any reports of serious injuries or fatalities on roads in Allegan or Ottawa counties since the storm began on Thursday afternoon until Sunday afternoon, when a report of a crash with critical injuries came from Robinson Township..
