LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 19, 2022) – A long-dormant BMX bicycle track at Laketown Township Shore Acres Park will come back to life this summer as a pump track thanks to donations, grants and good old-fashioned hard work.
The Michigan’s Edge Mountain Biking Association most recently approached the parks commission in May 2021 to take over maintenance from the longtime
caretaker of the BMX track. In November of that year, the commission unanimously supported a request from MEMBA to refurbish the area for a pump track and seek a grant for the work. The township does not fund the track or improvements, though it will restore the operation of a water spigot in the area of the track for regular maintenance. The new track will be user-maintained.
A pump track is a specialized bike course intended to be ridden without pedaling. Pump tracks have small rolling hills, banked turns and jumps that are built to be “pumped” as the primary means of creating and maintaining speed. BMX tracks are built with advanced riders and a specific style of bike in mind.
