WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 15, 2022) – Fred Upton and Bill Huizenga now have another thing in common – both have contracted COVID 19.
While Huizenga, a six-term Republican Congressman from Zeeland, came down with the coronavirus in October of 2020, Upton, an 18-term US House Representative from St. Joseph, reported on Tuesday that he, too, is stricken with the disease. In a statement from his office, Upton said, “I tested positive for COVID 19 after taking a routine test. Thankfully, I am fully vaccinated and boosted and experiencing mild symptoms. Per CDC protocol, I will isolate for the next five days as required.
“I will be paying very careful attention to (Ukranian) President (Volodymyr) Zelynskyy tomorrow as he addresses a joint session of Congress. This will be one of the most consequential addresses of all my time in Congress.”
Although Upton himself is on the proverbial shelf, his offices in his current 6th US House District will remain open.
Due to new maps drawn up by the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission at the end of 2021 which reflect the loss of one seat in the US House due to the 2020 US Census, the new 4th Congressional District pits Huizenga and Upton against each other for the GOP nomination in the August 2nd Primary Election.
