UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 27, 2022) – Hope College captured a pair of MIAA basketball tournament championships yesterday. At DeVos Fieldhouse, Clayton Dykehouse and Evan Thomas each scored 20 points as the Flying Dutchmen prevailed over the visiting Calvin Knights, 76-68. In Angola, Sydney Muller tossed in 15 points with 11 rebounds as the Flying Dutch downed the host Trine Thunder, 54-50. Both of Hope’s teams now await tomorrow afternoon’s announcement of the NCAA Division III tournament pairings to see who, when and where they begin their national championship quest next weekend.
Grand Valley State split a pair of games at Saginaw Valley State yesterday to end regular season play. In the women’s opener, Emily Spitzley had 19 points as the Lakers won the regular season title with a 56-49 victory. Delano Smith tallied 22 points as the host Cardinals took the men’s nightcap. On Wednesday, both of GVSU’s teams begin GLIAC tournament action, as the women host the Northern Michigan Wildcats at the Fieldhouse Arena, while the men head right back to Kochville Township in battling SVSU.
