EAST LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 22, 2022) – Three Lakeshore students have won a prestigious statewide honor.
On Tuesday, the Michigan High School Athletic Association announced that Ella Spooner of West Ottawa High School will join Holland High classmates Greta VanZetten and Elzien Zomer as three of 32 MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award winners. The program, now in its 33rd year of existence, awards $2,000 college scholarships based on grade point average (at least 3.5 on 4.0 scale), winning at least one varsity letter in a MHSAA-sponsored championship sport, participation in other school and community activities, and the quality of an essay about the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.
Spooner is a two-year varsity basketball player and four-year lacrosse performer at West Ottawa; VanZetten is a four-year varsity swimmer and will be a part of Holland High’s spring track and field team; and Zomer has three years of varsity basketball and swimming, along with two years of varsity soccer with the Dutch. Among the other Class A finalists for this award from the Lakeshore was West Ottawa’s Natalie Blake.
The 32 award winners will be honored during the MHSAA boys’ basketball finals at Michigan State University’s Breslin Student Events Center on March 26th.
