WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Overshadowed by the ongoing COVID 19 outbreak and the health restrictions stemming from it this past weekend was a relatively safe Thanksgiving holiday on area roads.
Only one accident that required hospitalization of motorists was reported by authorities in Allegan and Ottawa counties from Wednesday evening through Sunday night. While traffic was slightly less from past holiday weekends due to the health restrictions, the ad campaign focusing on buckling up was also a factor, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Eric Westveer.
“It’s about the awareness of safety with your driving habits,” he explained on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during a Monday appearance, “but sometimes the stops, pulling people over, just that visual, it would cause 50 cars, 100 cars going by, seeing that visual reminder helps with the awareness of putting on that seat belt and driving safely.”
More road patrols, funded by the state Office of Highway Safety Planning, are expected later this month statewide.
