UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM) – There will be at least one Lakeshore team playing for a district title in the state high school gridiron football tournament next weekend.
On Sunday, the Michigan High School Athletic Association posted on its website these games:
-
Holland at East Grand Rapids – Friday, November 6, 7 PM kickoff
-
Middleville Thornapple-Kellogg at Zeeland West – Friday, November 6, 7 PM kickoff
-
Hamilton v. Unity Christian – Friday, November 6, 7 PM kickoff at Baldwin Middle School
However, on Wednesday, on advice from the Ottawa County Department of Public Health, Zeeland West officials decided to forfeit the Dux’ game with Middleville due to COVID 19 “contact tracing.” It’s the same situation that wiped out West’s volleyball state tournament run before it was set to start on Wednesday. As a result, the Holland at East Grand Rapids game is expected to air at 6:40 PM on 99 7/1450 WHTC.
On Friday, the same “contact tracing” fate befell Unity Christian, as the school announced on Twitter: “Due to COVID-19 concerns, the football game against Hamilton High School has been cancelled. Unfortunately, this ends the season for our football team. Tickets will be refunded through GoFan.” This means that Hamilton gets a forfeit win and a pass into the Division 4 district final against the winner of Grand Rapids Christian-Grand Rapids South Christian contest next weekend.
Recapping the opening weekend results:
-
Unity Christian 57, Holland Christian 7
-
Zeeland West 66, Ottawa Hills 12
-
Hamilton 10, Godwin Heights 7
-
White Pigeon 24, Saugatuck 0
-
Rockford 41, West Ottawa 7
Holland at Zeeland East and Fennville at Buchanan were forfeit wins for Holland and Buchanan due to COVID 19 and health-related issues involving Zeeland East and Fennville.
