HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Grand Rapids Water Protectors has planned a demonstration advocating for the shut down of the Enbridge Line 5 along with a beach clean up at Holland State Park at 2 p.m. June 28, 2020.
The demonstration has been organized, according to their email to media, by local water activists “to highlight the threat posed to our Great Lakes, stemming from the aging and recently damaged oil pipeline which runs through a critical juncture between Lakes Michigan and Huron.”
An oil spill in the Mackinac Straits could “have terrible effects on the ecology and economy of the entire Great Lakes region; the likelihood of which only grows as time passes and the pipeline further degrades.” wrote organizer Brandy Reyes in her email to media.
She said this weekend’s gathering is set from 2 to 5 p.m., with activists on the beach at Holland State Park to protest the Line 5 oil pipeline and clean up the beach, while encouraging conversations about threats to the water.
Shannon Abbott, Grand Rapids Water Protectors’ president and Brandy Reyes, the group’s vice president, suggested via the event’s Facebook page that people carpool to limit the use of fossil fuel.
Holland State Park is at 2215 Ottawa Beach Road in Park Township.
Grand Rapids Water Protectors is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2017 and is dedicated to protecting water through education and direct action, according to Abbott and Reyes.
