CHESHIRE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 4, 2024) – An Allegan County lake is off-limits to humans for the time being.
The county’s health department on Friday confirmed the presence of cyanobacteria, or harmful algal blooms, at Duck Lake, just north of the Van Buren County line and southwest of Allegan. Water samples sent to the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy for testing late last month revealed microcystin results that met or exceeded the US Environmental Protection Agency recommended recreation standards.
The health department has placed no body-contact signs at the lake, advising that residents and visitors avoid all water-related activities, along with keeping pets from drinking or going into the lake water, especially when the bloom of blue-green algae is present. Such a warning will remain until further testing shows no harmful algal blooms, or until those blooms disperse. When that will happen is not known.
Further information as to this situation is in our earlier story on the matter.
