ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 30, 2026) – An apparently drowsy driver, who caused a two-vehicle crash involving an ambulance in the Wayland area this past May, is behind bars.
On Tuesday, 36-year-old Gustavo Gomez-Escobeo was arraigned on three counts of reckless driving causing serious injury. The Rio Grande City, Texas man was driving a pickup truck on northbound US-131 during the evening of May 20th, near the 63 mile marker, south of the 135th Avenue exit, when it slammed into an ambulance, which was taking a patient to a hospital for treatment. The force of the collision caused the medical vehicle to veer into a ditch and flipped over onto its roof.
The patient had to be flown to Corewell-Butterworth Hospital with serious injuries, while two ambulance staffers were also hospitalized with non life-threatening ailments. Gomez-Escobeo admitted to deputies at the scene that he had dozed off behind the wheel.
The accused remains in the Allegan County Jail awaiting a preliminary hearing at Allegan District Court.
