LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 31, 2026) – The ongoing effort to address access to the Lake Michigan shore at a municipal park is the focus of a special meeting by the Laketown Township Board of Trustees on Tuesday evening.
The governing panel will hold two separate public hearings for state Department of Natural Resources grants, which would go towards improvements at Laketown Township Beach. One is for a $150,000 DNR Passport Grant which, with a $50,000 match from the township, would fund steps at the top of the dune, along with a 10×32 foot viewing platform, benches and signage, as well as dune restoration plantings of grass, trees and shrubs. The second is for a $318,500 DNR Trust Fund Grant, with an equal match from the township, to complete the overall three-phase project.
Earlier this month, Township Supervisor Steve Ringelberg and his fellow trustees voted to increase funding in the Parks and Recreation Budget to cover construction of the steps from the top of the dune to the shoreline.
After the public hearings, the board is expected to discuss these matters before possibly voting on whether to go ahead with these grant application plans.
The Laketown Township Board’s special meeting begins at 6 PM in the township hall (4338 Beeline Rd.).
