Edna Maura Doyle, beloved child of God and her parents, Dr. Dominick and Nancy (Mackey) Doyle, was born on January 19, 1928, in Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of three children. Their elegant and historically significant family home had once belonged to Robert Emmett, Irish patriot determined to fight against English domination.
Edna’s formal schooling included ten years at the Loreto School and Abbey, followed by three years at Trinity College and the Dublin School of Physiatry. Although an Army doctor himself, her father urged her not to pursue a career in medicine, as it would be unseemly for a woman of her day. Honoring his advice until he died, she began three years at the Dublin Hospital, after which she emigrated to Jersey City NJ in the United
States. Following three years there and another three years in Norman OK, followed by practice and continued studies in Monroe LA and Lausanne, Switzerland, she eventually reached New Orleans LA in September 1970. After eight years, she became an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Louisiana State University. Completing a year at the University of Paris, at age 42 she began private practice until retirement.
Edna is survived by her sister Myra (Nigel) Gardner of London, England. Her brother Eamonn died, leaving his survivors, wife Rosemary (Morris) and their children, Sinead and Dominic, and the grandchildren Sophia and James Gilbody. Brighid Clarke and Maureen Tarpey of Dublin, Ireland and Anne Cade in Portland OR are Edna’s first cousins.
