Lavonne Maas, age 98, longed to be with her Lord and Savior. On February 8, that wish came true. Though she will be missed by many, we are so grateful for the blessing she was to our family and for the Christian legacy she left for us all.
Lavonne graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School and Reformed Bible Institute. She taught for many years at Allendale Christian Schools and was a substitute teacher at other Christian schools. She enjoyed being librarian at South Olive Christian School as well. She faithfully served as minister’s wife for 34 years, starting in Woden, IA; moving to Everett WA; South Olive, MI; and Marion, SD. She was married to Reverend John Maas for 52 years until his passing in 2006.
Lavonne is survived by children Mark (Ann) Maas of Grand Haven, Mary (Richard) Hayward of Clarkston, WA, Joel (Sandy) Maas of Zeeland, and Paul (Julie) Maas of West Olive. She was a loving grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren as well. She is also survived by brothers Kenneth (Juella) Niewenhuis, and Bob (Faith) Niewenhuis; as well as sister-in-law Dorothy (Roger) DeHaan.
Lavonne was preceded in death by brothers Wallace (Mindy) Niewenhuis, Calvin (Ethel) Niewenhuis, and Dale (Fran) Niewenhuis; as well as sister Edith (Bert) Dejong. She was also preceded by brothers-in-law Joe (Mildred) Maas, Ted (Althea) Maas, and Harold Maas; as well as sisters-in-law Florence (Elmer) Nymeyer and Jeanette (Lawrence) Bergakker.
