CASCO TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The woman who represents most of Allegan County in the state House wants one more term in Lansing.
On Monday, Mary Whiteford announced that she has filed paperwork to run for a third and final two-year stint in the Lower Chamber. The Republican from the South Haven area had lost in the GOP Primary to Cindy Gamrat in 2014, but won a special election nearly 18 months later when Gamrat was thrown out of the Legislature in the wake of a scandal with Todd Courser.
“I knew that I wanted to serve as long as I could,” she said during her monthly appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town,” “and I feel like I keep getting better and better in figuring out better ways to do things.”
A member of the House Appropriations Committee, Whiteford would be able to serve more than the six-year limit if she wins reelection due to the timing of when she assumed the remainder of Gamrat’s term. No other Republican is expected to oppose her in the August Primary, and the Michigan Secretary of State’s office has an April 21st deadline for any Democrat to file for challenging Whiteford in the November 3rd General Election.
