HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Hamilton resident Dennis Lee Bowman told a Virginia judge he’d like to plead guilty to a second-degree murder charge and act as his own attorney, but the judge didn’t jump to accept that, according to WAVY TV.
Bowman, 70, was arrested last year on suspicison of raping and murdering the Navy officer’s wife in 1980
He was extradited over the weekend to face charges in the cold-case investigation of the strangling and stabbing of Kathleen Doyle, found dead at her home on September 11, 1980. Her husband had been deployed as a Navy pilot aboard the USS Eisenhower.
Bowman’s bond has been denied. He’s due back in court on April 30, according to Norfolk city jail records.
WOOD TV documented Bowman’s criminal record, which stretches back to 1980, where he faced assault, burglary and sexual assault charges here in West Michigan — he’s also now under suspicion in the disappearance of his 14-year-old adopted daughter, Aundria Bowman, who vanished in 1989. Detectives found human remains under cement at Bowman’s property, which are being examined by forensics specialists now.
