HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Two women were serious injured in a two-vehicle crash east of Holland on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant David VanderPloeg, 35-year-old Chanthavilay Herrara of Fennville was driving her van westbound on Adams Street around 2 PM and attempted to turn left onto the westbound entrance ramp of I-196, while 22-year-old Rachel Kroeze of Holland was driving her SUV eastbound. Last year, the Ottawa County Road Commission had installed a traffic signal at that intersection in an effort to cut down on the number of mishaps at that location.
In this situation, Herrara told responding deputies that her signal had turned yellow, assumed that the approaching Kroeze would come to a stop, and started to make her turn. The younger woman responded that the signal was green for her, and a witness at the scene made a same statement to authorities.
Herrara’s van turned in front of Kroeze’s SUV, causing the collision. Herrera was taken to Holland Hospital for treatment, while Kroeze went to Spectrum-Zeeland Community Hospital.
The incident remains under investigation.
