HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The City of Holland issued a winter-preparedness statement Monday afternoon, Jan. 28, 2019:
City officials say they are ready to implement an emergency management plan if needed. Police officers are working to help get homeless people to warming shelters.
The Holland Rescue Mission, 365 Fairbanks Ave. and 166 S. River Ave., can house up to 250 people per night and are currently not turning anyone away, according to the city’s statement. Call (616) 396-2200.
Police and fire officials encourage everyone to use caution when using heating devices at home. Their tips include:
- using space heaters only where needed and in accordance with manufacturer’s directions.
- Do not use gas ranges and stove tops as supplemental heat sources
Residents are reminded to clear the snow from fire hydrants to allow quick access by firefighters. At the same time, work carefully and take warm-up breaks, as temperatures could quickly lead to frostbite.
Snow plows are out and about; city officials ask drivers to be cautious, as the snow and wind could limit visibility.
Holland Board of Public Works increased the temperature of the water for the snowmeltsystem to get through this upcoming deep freez but cannot guarantee that all walkways will remain clear during these extremem temperatures.
