GRAND RPAIDS (WHTC-AM/FM) — The National Weather Service has a winter storm warning in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan, 31, 2019.
Area residents can expect lake-effect snow showers — with 3 to 6 inches accumulating — blowing and drifting snow.
Dangerously cold wind chills, as low as 25 to 40 below zero are expected tonight through Thursday morning.
Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility for drivers and those hazardous conditions will affect the morning and evening commutes.
Wind chills are dangerous because frostbite can happen to exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Elderly people, those with circulation issues, and very young children are more suseptible.
Drivers are encouraged to keep an extra flashlight, food and water, blankets and extra gloves and socks in each vehicle, in case of an emergency.
