HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland firefighters were called to the report of a carport on fire at 335 Oxford Court at 1:02 a.m. this morning, July 5, 2019. No one was hurt, according to Holland Fire Capt. Chris Tinney.
Firefighters found the structure fully involved, and remained on the scene for about two hours, making sure the fire was out.
Holland Township firefighters were summoned for mutual aid, when it appeared the fire might spread. into the apartment building adjacent to the carport.
The fire was under control and mostly extinguished at around 2:45 am. Crews remained on scene until 3:12 am to make sure the fire was completely out.
Residents in the occupied apartments adjacent to the fire were evacuated as a precautionary measure, Tinney said.
The dollar value of damage can’t be estimated at this time, Tinney said, noting that two vehicles were parked in the carport and are a total loss.
The apartment building exterior had significant heat damage, but the structure itself was safe for residents to return to their homes, Tinney said.
At this time the cause of the fire is not immediately known and the Department’s Fire Marshal has initiated an investigation as to the origin and cause of the fire. Anyone that witnessed the fire or has information pertaining to it, please call 616-355-1024.
Also providing suppert: Graafschap Fire Department and the Hamilton Fire Department covered fire stations during hte carport fire, in case other calls came in. AMR Ambulance paramedics were on scene, in the event of injuries.
Tinney included a reminder for residents that smoke alarms save lives — and that residents should check each device on a monthly basis, changing batteries at least twice a year and replace the alarm itself after 10 years.
