ALLEGAN (WHTC-AM/FM) — Allegan County Sheriff’s Office K9 Luca has received a bullet and stab protective vest, according to a statement emailed to media Monday by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office.
Luca’s vest. sponsored by Sharon Peters of Gross Pointe Shores, will be embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Det. Lt. Richard J. Scott.” Scott, a 35-year veteran of the Roseville, MI, poice department died more than five years ago; Peters is his daughter..
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is an East Taunton, MA-based 501c(3) charity dedicated to providing the safety vests and other resources to law enforcement dogs throughout the US. Since 2009, Vested Interest has provided over 2,800 protective vests valued at $2.4 million, using private and corporate donations.
Luca, a 20-month-old German shepherd imported from Poland, is partnered with Deputy Ryan Rewa, who has been with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office for three and a half years.
Luca joined Allegan County Sheriff’s office a little more six months ago, training for fve weeks with Deputy Rewa before the two started patrolling together.
Luca is trained in drug detection, tracking, suspect apprehension and handler protection. Deputy Rewa and Luca make regular visits to classrooms as part of their communitiy relations duties.
