HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — If you’re ready to head over the river and through the woods — or on some other long drive — Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker has some tips for road safety.
Start with being rested before you get behind the wheel, because, face it, those long drives can be exhausting, he said.
“In the winter time, it’s even more challenging, when you’re fatigued,” he said. “Obviously, you’re not only dealing with the traffic issues, you’re dealing with the weather issues.”
Be rested before you leave — and take a brief break every 45 minutes or so.
Make sure the car is in good working order, especially tires.
“Make sure your tires are properly inflated and that you don’t mix tire types,
You may gas up before you go, but don’t let the tank get close to empty — Baker said travellers should keep those gas tanks at least half full.
And if your route is unfamiliar, make sure you’ve got help in the directions department, either with maps or devices that can read map directions as you’re driving.
While on the road, buckle up.
