LANSING, MI (WHTC) – It will be three days and counting for the Lakeshore as weather conditions more in keeping with July or August than June will extend the first Air Quality Alert days stretch of the season through the weekend and into a new work week.
The state Department of Environmental Quality on Sunday afternoon issued a third consecutive Action Day for Allegan and Ottawa counties, as well as five others in the region, to predicted elevated levels of ozone. Pollutants are expected to be in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range, and residents are asked to hold off on various activities that could lead to ozone formation. On Action Days, the Macatawa Area Express normally waives fares for its fixed bus routes that serves Holland, Zeeland and Holland Township, although this doesn’t apply to Sundays, as MAX buses aren’t scheduled to run.
While these are the first air quality alert days for 2017 in this area, it comes later in the year than in 2016, when the first of nine Action Days last year was called on May 23rd. With the forecast for the entire week calling for warmer than normal temperatures, more such advisories could be forthcoming.
