GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Road crews working in Grand Haven have discovered remnants of a Corduroy Road.
The crews were working on 168th Avenue in Grand Haven Township when the contractor discovered the road. According to their Facebook Page, in the mid-1800s people would fix a soggy road by cutting timber and lining them up next to each other to stabilize the road.
Usually the Corduroy Road would be removed when the road was improved, but there are still some areas that just covered up the timber and built the road on top. Most of 144th Avenue still has Corduroy Road way down at the bottom.
Crews found about 50 linear feet of this timber and believe it was put there circa 1855 when Grand Haven Township was logging town.
This type of road was regularly used in Europe as early as 4,000 BC.
