POLKTON TWP., MI (WHTC) – Two 21-year-old White Lake men suffered critical injuries in a single-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon that closed I-96 near Coopersville for a couple of hours.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies say that Craig Vernon was driving a SUV eastbound around 1:20 PM and had passed the 68th Avenue exit when his vehicle drifted into the median. It then veered sharply right across the eastbound lanes, went off of the roadway and slammed into a tree head on.
It took about 45 minutes before first responders were able to extricate Vernon and front-seat passenger Jack Flynn from the vehicle. Both were taken to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital for treatment.
Deputies added that both men were buckled up at the time of the crash and are awaiting results of toxicology tests as the incident remains under investigation.
