HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Students at Waukazoo Elementary in Holland were not even born when the 911 attacks occurred 15 years ago, but they will place flags in honor of the 911 anniversary on Sunday, September 11.
Principal Ami Taylor whose been with the school for six years, says that at the elementary level it varies in each classroom on what they talk to them about. It’s based on the children’s age, the questions the students may be asking, where they are developmentally, but proceeding cautiously. “This is a day of honoring and we work hard at the elementary level to not get into too many details especially with our youngest children.”
Waukazoo Elementary has been placing flags for 15 years to celebrate Patriot’s Day. It was started by a group of parents and the former principal. Taylor says they have a very compassionate groups of parents who organize it each year and the PTA helps with the flags and replacing the old ones.
All 468 students will place a flag this afternoon, Friday, September 9. The flags will line the sidewalks and walkways of the school due to road construction in the area.
