ALLEGAN (WHTC) – Two top Allegan County Republican leaders are calling on first-term State Representative Cindy Gamrat to resign in the wake of allegations she and a fellow lawmaker used their offices and staff in an apparent attempt to cover up an extramarital affair. In separate statements on Saturday, county party Chairman Steve McNeal and former GOP chair Gerry Hildenbrand called for Gamrat, who was elected to the House last November, to step down from her seat over her relationship with fellow Representative Todd Courser. McNeal says Gamrat “has proven to be unfit to represent the hardworking residents of Allegan County, using taxpayer dollars to abide and assist her gross misconduct. Based on these revelations, Rep. Cindy Gamrat cannot continue to represent the residents of Allegan County, who are a great, hard working, faith-based community.” Hildenbrand says “the most shocking part of these revelations is that Rep. Gamrat has been an outspoken voice for both Christian conservative values and the appropriate size and scope of government. She has betrayed both of those with these actions.” House Speaker Kevin Cotter has asked the nonpartisan House Business Office to investigate potential violations of House rules involving Gamrat and Courser.
