ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) – Renovations at Howard Miller Library and Community Center, delayed by the retirement of long-time director Dennis Martin, are moving forward.
Zeeland City Council is set to approve the latest contracts for the $700,000 project at tonight’s regular meeting.
The Grand Rapids-based contractor BCI Construction submitted the low bid of $302,535, which includes a 10 percent contingency, said Bob VandeVusse, the library and conference center’s current director.
The project will create a new conference room in the building’s basement and add library space.
“On the second floor, we’ll take that conference room space, take the barrier out and a wall out and that will all be library function,” he said. VandeVusse said the library’s collections have suffered from a space shortage in recent years.
Library Design Associates’277,951 bid will cover new fixtures, new carpet throughout the building and refreshing some old furniture’s upholstery.
If approved tonight, VandeVusse said, work would start between Christmas and New Year’s Day, wrapping up by Memorial Day.
