VALLEY TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The body of a diver was recovered from the Kalamazoo River, near the Calkins Bridge Dam on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, according to this statement from Consumers Energy:
“A diver who went missing while performing an underwater inspection at Consumers Energy’s Calkins Bridge Dam was found deceased before 4 p.m. today. A dive team from the Allegan County Sheriff Department, assisted by several other fire service and public safety partners, has removed the man’s body from the Kalamazoo River. Our hearts go out to this individual’s family, friends and co-workers during this tragic time. Safety remains Consumers Energy’s top priority and we will work with local authorities as an investigation regarding the cause of this incident is conducted.”
Emergency responders converged on the area just before noon, when the diver did not resurface when expected. Searchers spent more than three hours on the scene, employing drones, thermal imaging, marine patrol deputies and other resources to find the diver.
