PAW PAW TOWNHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 49-year-old Wisconsin man is in critical condition after being shot while confronting police in Van Buren County’s Paw Paw Township.
Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott says dispatch received a 911 call around 9:30 p.m. Thursday for an unknown male cutting himself in a driveway. The investigation found that he committed a home invasion at that residence.
The home owners did not know the subject, and called to report the incident that was taking place. Prior to arrival by police, the subject left the scene on foot.
A Van Buren County Canine Unit along with a Village of Paw Paw police officer tracked the subject. The two were confronted by the subject, who still had the knife. The subject reportedly advanced towards the officer and deputy and was shot. First aid was administered and the man was transported to Bronson Hospital for his injuries.
The Paw Paw Police officer and the Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputy were placed on paid administrative leave per policy pending the investigation.
The Michigan State Police were called in to handle the officer involved shooting.
