PARK TWP., MI (Sept. 17, 2026) – There was some concern when a knife, which could be used as a weapon was discovered at a Lakeshore elementary school on Wednesday.
West Ottawa Public Schools officials say that a fifth-grade student brought such a blade to Great Lakes Elementary School, but it was “immediately secured,” according to principal Matt Brummel, and staff followed district safety protocols in handling the matter promptly. At no point was the knife utilized, and no students, faculty or staff members were harmed.
The name and gender of the student wasn’t disclosed, and the district is not commenting on what disciplinary actions will be taken. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is working with the district in investigating the incident.
