HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 27, 2026) – After more than three decades of serving gyros, Chicago dogs, Italian beef and other favorites to the Holland community, Mr. Kozak’s Gyros in Downtown Holland is closing its doors.
The longtime restaurant announced that Friday, August 28, will be its final day of operation at its E. 8th Street location.
For Sia Niotis, the restaurant’s closing marks the end of a remarkable chapter that began shortly after her parents moved from Chicago to Holland in the early 1990s.
“My parents moved from Chicago to Holland in the early 90s and opened Kozak’s very shortly after moving to Michigan,” Nia said.
The family has operated both Kozak’s locations over the years, including the Holland restaurant and the original location in Grand Haven. The Grand Haven location closed in 2022.
From the beginning, the goal was simple: bring the family’s Chicago roots and love of food to West Michigan.
“We’ve always strived to serve the highest quality Chicago-style fast food,” Nia said.
That meant familiar favorites such as gyros, Chicago dogs and Italian beef becoming staples for customers looking for a taste of Chicago in West Michigan.
The Niotis’ are a Greek-Polish immigrant family, and the restaurant became more than simply a place to grab a quick meal. It became a family business that remained a part of the Holland community for more than 30 years.
Over the years, generations of customers have walked through the doors — and, in more recent years, pulled through the restaurant’s drive-thru — to enjoy their favorite Kozak’s meals.
Now, in her statement to WHTC, Nia says the family is “ready to retire and close the business.”
This weekend gives customers one final opportunity to enjoy a meal from a restaurant that has been part of the Holland-area food scene for more than three decades.
Nia stated the family expressed its gratitude to everyone who supported Kozak’s throughout the years.
“Thank you to all of our loyal customers who have supported us all these years.”
After more than 30 years, the Kozak family is saying goodbye to the Holland community — and leaving behind a legacy built on family, food and a taste of Chicago.
Mr. Kozak’s Gyros will be open through Friday, August 28 with hours of operation to be from 11am-6pm.
